The Central Andes is\na region where varied natural environments align along steep\nmountain slopes. This article deals with the native exploitation\nof this environments, focusing mainly on land use.\nIn Amarete arable lands are divided according to the altitude\ninto two parts. There are the . upper and the lower, as in the\nother Andean communities. In the ideal of the Amaretean\nwaqe) are attached. This division of land is a device for reducing\ncrop damage by the bad weather and for preventing the total\nloss of the agricultural production of a family or the whole\ncommunity.\nHistorically the traditional forms of land use, for example,\nthe rotation system of kapanas, land tenure and land inheritance,\nseem to have changed. This could have been caused by the\ninvasion of the outsiders and the Bolivian Agrarian Reform\ncommenced in 1952. The loan of lands exists between Amarete\nand its annex villages where the arable fields are scarce, as well as\nbetween Amarete and other villages of the Charazani valley\nwhere manpower is lacking.\npeople, the former is used for producing potatoes, and the latter\nfor maize. But besides these two crops a large quantity of tuber\ncrops, like oca and isano, wheat and barley, beans and peas, are\nalso cultivated.\nTher otation of crops is done both in the upper and lower\nparts, and the same crop is not cultivated for two in succession\nyears. In the upper part of the cultivated field the rotation cycle\nis seven years, and selection of the crop to be sown and sowing in\none rotation unit are controlled by the entire community. In\nthe lower part, crop rotation is also practiced but this is not\nsubject to communal control.\nTwo or more separate tracts of land are combined as a set.\nA rotation unit (kapana) is composed of one large tract of land\nand smaller annex pieces.
