It\nalso tends to see \"the official Islam\" as an instrument in the\nhands of those in power. But in Cairo, which is without doubt\none of the most flourishing centers of the Islamic world and where\na field study was carried out in 1977-8, practice does not sub-statiate\nsuch a view. There the 'Ulama' and the Sufi orders show\nmany signs of co-existence.\nWhat symbolizes the close relationship between the two,\nboth in terms of spatial and social intimacy, is the Azhar-Husayni\nComplex, which is situated in the center of old Cairo. The\nAzhar with its numerous institutions represents the Islam of\nthe 'Ulamd', while the Sufi orders are represented by the Husayn\nMosque and the Supreme Council of the Sufi orders. All of\nthese are in one area, measuring about 300 m by 200 m, and\nconstitute one religious center. Here we can recognize many\ndifferent aspects of inter-relationship and co-existence : the two\nIslams, so to speak, have their own hierarchical structures, starting\nfrom the top of the pyramid and being merged into the mass\nwithout clear borders; furthermore the hierarchies penetrate\neach other in concrete social terms.
