From an ethnological and geographical\nperspective the rural house is an important key to settlement\nstructure. The typical characteristics of the roof types and\nbuilding materials, house plans, farmstead types show regional\ndifferentiation and reflect specific aspects of local ways of life.\nAs a result of a rapid change in village life, Europe has faced\nthe problem of a complete loss of its traditional folk architecture.\nInitially, Open-Air Museums were designed to preserve folk\narchitecture and folk culture. The number of Open-Air Museums\nhas grown considerably in the second half of the 20th century.\nThis paper reports on an ethnological and geographical\nsurvey conducted in 1971, 1978 and 1984 (especially 1984) of 57\nEuropean Open-Air Museums.\n1.
