studies of Tibetan dialects, and then propose a classification of
all dialects known to date, together with the geographical
distribution of each of the six major dialect divisions : (1) Western

or U-Tsang Dialects, (4) Southern Dialects, (5) Khams Dialects,
and (6) Amdo Dialects.
There follows two sections devoted to a discussion of phonological,
lexical and grammatical features chosen as classificatory
criteria, with special reference to those advanced by Chinese
scholars, and to the application of some phonological features,
particularly those related to the development of tones to the
classification of most Tibetan dialects spoken in the area to the
