It is possible that many\nAndeanists have regarded this economic institution as not being\nautochthonous, and, rather that than via markets their economic\ncomplementarity was derived by utilization of different ecological\nniches and/or through barter or trade among inhabitants of\ndifferent ecological environments.\nI conducted two season's extensive field research in the\nHighland of the Department of La Paz, Bolivia, one of the most\nflourishing regions of periodical markets in the Central Andes\n(Map 1). The first season's research was conducted in the\nnorthern areas (Titicaca Basin and the Eastern Slope) and the\nsecond in the Altiplano area, for total of seven months, from\nJuly to September 1983 and from August to November 1985.\nBoth periods focused on the following topics:\n(1) The collection of ethnographical data;\n(2) The correlation between the diversity of ecological\nenvironments and periodical markets;\n(3) The economic functions of periodical markets in rural\nsociety;\n(4) The rural-urban relationships brought about by periodical\nmarkets; and\n(5) The social functions of periodical markets in rural\nsociety.\nThe northwestern highland of Bolivia is divided into three\necological sub-regions : the Altiplano, the Titicaca Basin and\nthe Eastern Slope. Of a total of 83 weekly markets observed\n(Table 2), 24 are found in the first region, 27 in the second, and\n32 in the last.\nIn the Altiplano local markets are generally large in scale,\nand middlemen have a very important role in collecting and\ntransporting a large quantity of agricultural products (especially\npotato and chew) to La Paz. In the small but numerous markets\nof the Titicaca Basin and the Eastern Slope on the other hand,\nthe peasants negotiate with so called rescatistas, females who come\nfrom small towns or villages and who make commercial transactions\nby purchasing or bartering small quantities of products.\nBoth types of periodical markets function as a rural-urban\neconomic linkage through which a large part of the foodstuffs\nconsumed by urban populations (including La Paz) is supplied,\nand via which the peasants obtain cash or manufactured goods\nin exchange for local products.\nPeriodical markets are common and widespread throughout\nthe entire region investigated. This is one of the characteristics\nof the regional economy in the south of the Central Andean\nhighlands when compared to the north. The kinds of agricultural\nproducts and manufactured goods transacted are almost\nthe same throughout the entire region. It must be emphasized\nthat these local markets as a whole function primarily as a food\nsupply system to cities and towns, although they clearly function\ntoo, in part, as an institution of ecological complementarity\nwithin a limited region. The former function is most notable\nin the Altiplano sub-region and the latter is observable in the\nTiticaca sub-region, where lake fishermen, for example, complement\ntheir livelihood through bartering in markets with agriculturalists\nfrom the valleys.\nThe primary role of the market as a rural products supply\nsystem cannot be over-emphasized in the case of the western\nhighland of Bolivia, in particular. But the so many and so\nfrequent participation of the peasants in market activities cannot\nbe explained just by city demand. The principles of market\neconomy such as anonimity, universality and supremacy of profit\naims [SHANIN 1973] are of a very different nature to the traditional\nand normative way of life within a rural community. So, in\na sense, the market provides an occasion for experimenting with\ninnovative behavior, free from traditional and normative ways\nof life.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15021/00004353","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_9_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国立民族学博物館"}]},"item_9_publisher_34":{"attribute_name":"出版者(英)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"National Museum of Ethnology"}]},"item_9_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00091943","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_9_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0385-180X","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_9_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"藤井, 龍彦"},{"creatorName":"フジイ, タツヒコ","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"},{"creatorName":"Fujii, Tatsuhiko","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{},{},{},{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KH_012_1_002.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"8.5 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KH_012_1_002.pdf","url":"https://minpaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4361/files/KH_012_1_002.pdf"},"version_id":"40bc30a9-c821-4600-aec5-95234905f44f"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"中央アンデスの定期市 : ボリビア領ラパス県高地部の事例","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"中央アンデスの定期市 : ボリビア領ラパス県高地部の事例"},{"subitem_title":"Periodical Markets in the Highland of the Department of La Paz, Bolivia","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"9","owner":"17","path":["458"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2010-02-16"},"publish_date":"2010-02-16","publish_status":"0","recid":"4361","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["中央アンデスの定期市 : ボリビア領ラパス県高地部の事例"],"weko_creator_id":"17","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-20T19:27:30.970328+00:00"}
