In 1975, they developed Gamardi\noutstation within their traditional region (country). They\nexploit wild resources as foods in this Swamp-Eucalyptus forest\necosystem.\nThey mainly exploit waterfowl, wallaby, emu, waterbuffalo\nand fishes, which form 50% of their food. The hunting\nstrategies utilized to take these game have been changed by\nnewly introduced equipment such as shotguns, rifles and 4\nwheel-drive trucks. For example, when they hunt one species\nof waterfowl (Anseranas semipalmata) they use a system of triangulation\nbased the sounds made by the bird to pinpoint hunting\nspots. This hunting strategy is based on the modern equipment.\nAbout three decades ago waterfowl were hunted in the evening,\nusing spears and spear-throwers, from the trees beside the swamp.\nBesides these changes in hunting strategies, the inhabitants\nof Gamardi outstation still follow the food taboos strictly. One\nof these is applied on the death of close kin, especially a father\nand a father's siblings. In this case a person cannot eat nor\nhunt/gather the main totemic (Dreaming) animals/plants of\nthe dead person, since it is believed that the spirits of the dead\nperson and their ancesters dwell in these totemic animals/plants.\nTwo or three years after the funeral ceremony (manekai), a\npurification ceremony (wandjil) releases them from the taboo.\nAccording to my survey, the inhabitants of Gamardi outsta-\ntion retain these beliefs despite of the new hunting equipment\nand strategies.
