The study\nfocuses on the socio-religious and clinical context of the expression\nof possession.\nIn Japan, kitsunetsuki has long been one of the most familiar\nexpressions of indigenous \"madness\". Nevertheless, psychiatric\nresearch on the phenomenon, including those from folkloristic\nand religious perspectives, have been conducted only since the\n1960s. Hitherto, kitsunetsuki had been regarded as a vestige of\nsuperstition.\nThe first part of the paper deals with some methodological\nproblems encountered when spirit possession is defined as a\n\"culture-bound syndrome\". The features of this phenomenon\nchange according to various approaches used to understand it.\nIn the second part, two cases are examined from psychiatric\nrecords. In the first a 18-year-old male became psychotically\nexcited after fatigue and a traffic accident. During his severe\nconfusion he manifested fox-like jumping actions. His family\nregarded him as being possessed by local gods, and so left him\nunattended for a month. He was hospitalized and was in\ncomplete remission after three months of treatment. His\nillness is diagnosed as \"atypical psychosis\" [MITSUDA 1979:\n121-124].\nIn the second case a 34-year-old housewife (an aunt of the\nmale in the first case), entered a psychiatric hospital as a result\nof illness induced by conjugal discord. After undergoing a series\nof religious rituals to evict the fox that possessed her, she came to\nhear the voices of three foxes. Her illness is diagnosed as typical\n\"invocations psychosis\" [MORITA (森田) 1915: 286-287].\nThese two cases reveal a discrepancy between traditional\ntherapeutic ritual and modern psychiatric treatment.\nIn the third part of this paper, Kitsunetsuki is re-examined\nfrom the socio-religious viewpoint, based on interviews with\nvillagers. The reasons for the occurrence in this village of\nsymptoms of fox possession are considered in their cultural and\nreligious contexts. Kitsunetsuki of this district can be traced back\nto folkloristic and religious lines. Among other phenomena this\nis attested to by many folktales of foxes, public religious rituals\npracticed by the folkpriest, occasional visits of a man of the\n\"mountain religion\" and his furious performances under godpossession,\nand the famous kyogen play, which contains the\nmetamorphosis of fox, derived from the family temple of the\nvillagers. A major factor was acute social change in 1950s (e.g.,\nin the marriage system, in traditional forestry, etc.). One\ntherapeutic religious cult which came to exert considerable\ninfluence over the traditional religious order of this village was\nfinally absorbed into a large sect of Buddhism. Typically,\nspirit possession in this village seemed to be formed in accordance\nwith the god-possessing seances of this cult. From this standpoint\nthe two cases examined expressed themselves through the symbolic\nrepresentation of \"fox\", when they reached psychological\ncrises. The other curious disease, \"K village disease\", is a\nvariant product of this process. These acts of performance are\nmolded upon the complicated socio-cultural background;\n\"possession complex\" .\nThe last part of this paper presents some complemental\ndiscussions on the expression of fox-possession. The folkloristic\nand \"symptomatic\" peculiarity of this mountainous district, and\nits tendency to combine with spirit possession, is analysed and\ncompared with that in the plain district. Two different types of\nshamanism, spirit possession and ecstacy, are reconsidered,\nbased on the analogy of schizophrenic symptoms and other\nmystical thoughts.
