Part 1 explains the historical background of the sadhana: (1) the changes in the iconographic features of Buddhist deities, (2) the depiction of the deities in India, and (3) the rituals and visualisation connected with Indian deities and cosmology. Part 2 describes the textual sources for the Sanskrit and Tibetan texts edited in parts 5 and 6. The Sanskrit text is based on B. Bhattacharyya's edition of the Sadhanamala (Baroda, first edition 1925), Nos. 17, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 25, and on seven manuscripts (Tokyo University [MATSUNAMI 1965 : Nos. 451, 452, 453, 454]), Kyoto University [GOSHIMA and NOGUCHI 1983: Nos. 119 and 120] and National Archives, Kathmandu [Brhatsticipatram Vol. 39 : No. 3-387]). The Tibetan text is based on the Peking and the sDe dge editions. Part 3 describes the iconographical features of Simhanada- Avalokiteivara and the process of visualisation in his sadhanas. Part 4 presents an annotated Japanese translation of the sadhanas/dharani Nos. 17, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 25 of the Sadhanamala. Part 5 provides the Sanskrit text of these sections.
