In an\nergative language, transitive verbs require their agents to be in the\nergative case, and intransitive verbs their subjects to be in the absolutive\ncase. In Modern Tibetan, however, some transitive verbs don't require\ntheir agents to take the GIS Case Marker under certain conditions, while\nothers always do. And some intransitive verbs allow their subjects to\ntake the GIS Case Marker under certain conditions, while others always\nneed to be in the Absolutive Case. These conditions are not difficult to\nspecify; rather it's important to make clear which group each of the\nverbs belongs to. Tibetan verbs can be classified into four types according\nto the distribution of the GIS Case Noun. In addition, they can be\nclassified in terms of volitionality, which is not marked on the verb.
