National\nMuseum of Ethnology has inherited his documents and book collection,\nwhich is called \"Shinoda's document collection.\" The collection\ncontains questionnaires on Japanese sushi-eating habits. They were\nsent out and collected between 1953 and 1968, which was just the period\nwhen traditional local food habits were being replaced by a national\nhomogeneous habit.\nWe have planned to convert those questionnaires into computerreadable\nform and analyze them with the following two objectives:\n1) To survey the distribution of several types of sushi including\nnarezushi and the domestic lifestyle in those days concerning eating.\n2) To make Shinoda's data much more accessible to those who are interested\nin Japanese folklore and food habits.\nAs a preliminary work, we input data of about 1300 questionnaires,\none tenth of the entire volume, into a personal computer, and analyzed\nthe data from several viewpoints. In this paper, we give several distribution\nmaps of narezushi, inarizushi, makizushi, gomokuzushi, etc.\nThose distribution maps suggest the evidence of several cultural areas of\nsushi-eating in Japan.
