Up until now, a\nlack of information has made it difficult to study the history of Guangxi\nsociety and the early days of the Taiping. The aim of this article is to\nascertain the historical and socio-anthropological features of the middle\nclass lineages who migrated there.\nThe migration of these lineages to Pingnan started in the 16th century,\nmany of the migrants being soldiers dispatched to suppress the\nlocal Yao (A) minorities. They occupied an extensive land area under\nthe protection of the Dynastic army, and they achieved economic success\nowing to their power of tax collection delegated by the Dynasty. The\nsoldier migrants established their reputation by supervising public enterprises\nin the migrant society.\nDuring the Qing Dynasty, the soldier migrants fell from influence\nbecause they lost their hereditary posts. They could not cohere their\nlineage organizations and failed at the civil service examinations as they\nlacked educational facilities to bring up talented persons effectively in\ntheir lineages. As a result, they could not join the Kuji (V) elite\ngroup of influential migrant lineages and acquire political power.\n The middle class lineages, the soldier migrants included, took on a\nbehavioral pattern, known as wen2 xig6(温食)in Cantonese, according\nto which they pursued several different occupations at the same time in\norder to maintain the status quo, while reducing the danger of complete\nfailure. Their actions assumed a fluidity, with some low class members\nengaged in mean occupations. The upper and-middle class membeis\ntried to have some connection with local government service to maintain\ntheir leadership, but Hu Yi Huang failed.
