As its vernacular and\nEnglish names indicate (\"buk\" means colossal or strong) , pla buk is\nknown for its huge size, attaining a length of at least 2.5 m and a weight\nof more than 250 kg in adults. Although it is endemic to the Maekhong\nriver and its tributaries, little is known of the ecology and feeding habits\nof either juveniles or adults. Yet, mature individuals are captured locally\nin the main stream of the Maekhong by Thai and Lao fishermen in the\nborder areas of northern Thailand and Laos, when they ascend the river\nfor spawning from late April to the middle of May. Local folk\nknowledge of the pla buk is, on the contrary, rich, implying the cultural\nsignificance of this fish.\nPla buk fishing has not a long history. As local legends suggest, it\nmight be dated back no more than eighty to one hundred years, when a\nman from Ban Haad Khrai invented a net to catch this gigantic catfish.\nAt present, pla buk is caught by a gill net called \"mong lai\", which has\nbeen modified from the original shorter net called \"nam\" . It is 225 m\nlong, about 300 cm high and the mesh size is 30 cm. Gill netting is practised\nusing powered boats manned by crews of 4-5.\nThe rise in demand for the delicious flesh of pla buk in local and urban\nmarkets, means that the number of fishermen who engage in pla buk\nfishing has increased drastically in number to as many as 70, from four\nduring the last decade. Despite an effective lottery system to avoid\ncrowding and conflict among fishermen, overfishing has inevitably led to\na decline in pla buk populations.\nCeremonies and rituals held at the onset of the fishing season have\nmultiple significances. First, an evil-chasing ritual is prepared by each\ngroup. Second, prior to the first fishing, a good-luck ritual is conducted\nby special priests with sacrificed pigs and offerings to the master spirits of\nthe river and sand bank. Third, the above-mentioned second rituals are\nrepeated in public on the following day in a gorgeous manner as a\nfestival event of the local community. This transaction is in line with the\nincreasing popularity of pla buk fishing and incoming tourists. Fourth,\na ritual to entertain the female spirit of the fishing boat is observed.\nThe series of rituals is focused on and organized by the pla buk\nfishermen's club of the local community. It bears practical functions\nnot only to manage pla buk fishing but also to realize the cultural construction\nof rituals in accordance with an increasing need for local\ndevelopment and tourism.\nUnder such circumstances, an artificial insemination project, using\ncaptive pla buk males and females, was started in 1981 as a conservation\ngoal by the Thai Department of Fisheries, and first success was achieved\nin 1983. A demonstration of the release of captured pla buk found in\n1996 also suggests the changing condition of the pla buk fishery.\nAn integrated study of the biological and cultural aspects of pla buk\nfishery thus becomes a good example of anthropological inquiries aimed\nat understanding contemporary key issues of resources, development,\nand conservation. Further follow-up studies are also required to clarify\nthe relationships between rivers, fish and the riverine people of the\nMaekhong river.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_9_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15021/00004166","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_9_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国立民族学博物館"}]},"item_9_publisher_34":{"attribute_name":"出版者(英)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"National Museum of Ethnology"}]},"item_9_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00091943","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_9_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0385-180X","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_9_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"赤木, 攻"},{"creatorName":"アカギ, オサム","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"},{"creatorName":"Akagi, Osamu","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"秋道, 智彌"},{"creatorName":"アキミチ, トモヤ","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"},{"creatorName":"Akimichi , Tomoya","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{},{},{},{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"秋篠宮, 文仁"},{"creatorName":"アキシノノミヤ, フミヒト","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"},{"creatorName":"Akishinonomiya, Fumihito","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KH_021_2_001-01.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"8.2 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KH_021_2_001-01.pdf","url":"https://minpaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4174/files/KH_021_2_001-01.pdf"},"version_id":"20f31e3c-73f6-4f4d-a0bf-db354bb659bc"},{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KH_021_2_001-02.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"22.2 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KH_021_2_001-02.pdf","url":"https://minpaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4174/files/KH_021_2_001-02.pdf"},"version_id":"f6c8233b-2196-4666-bb3a-d4ad79860622"},{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KH_021_2_001-03.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"18.5 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KH_021_2_001-03.pdf","url":"https://minpaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4174/files/KH_021_2_001-03.pdf"},"version_id":"38a976d1-b940-4eef-a09b-f8321fda785c"},{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2015-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"KH_021_2_001_all.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"49.0 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"KH_021_2_001_all.pdf","url":"https://minpaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/4174/files/KH_021_2_001_all.pdf"},"version_id":"dbb7b608-6ac0-440e-8eb7-cd19394af0d2"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"プラー・ブック|精霊|人工繁殖|メーコーン河|プラー・ブック漁師クラブ","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Pla Buk|Phi|artificial insemination|Maekhong river|Pla Buk Fishermen's Association","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"北部タイ,チエンコーンにおけるプラー・ブック (Pangasianodon gigas) の民族魚類学的考察","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"北部タイ,チエンコーンにおけるプラー・ブック (Pangasianodon gigas) の民族魚類学的考察"},{"subitem_title":"An Ethnoichthyological Study of Pla Buk (Pangasianodon gigas) at Chiangkhong, Northern Thailand","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"9","owner":"17","path":["421"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2010-02-16"},"publish_date":"2010-02-16","publish_status":"0","recid":"4174","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["北部タイ,チエンコーンにおけるプラー・ブック (Pangasianodon gigas) の民族魚類学的考察"],"weko_creator_id":"17","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-20T17:18:39.516407+00:00"}
