It is in fact a field well-nigh a prerogative of sociologists and\ncultural anthropologists whose usage of such cultural anthropological\nterminology as ethnicity, ethnic identity, and ethnic consciousness in relation\nto a study of this nature reflects care and scientific precision. This exercise\ncannot lay claim to such strict methodological inquiry or conceptualization\nwhen discussing Sri Lankan Malay 'ethnicity'. However,\nfrom the point of view of the members of the community itself, who\ntreats themselves proudly as scions of an Eastern race, it would be appropriate\nto use such terms freely to highlight their unique ethnicity visa-\nvis a competing and over-whelming cultural situation.\nEthnicity, in the anthropologist's parlance usually means \"a proclamation\nof identity and worth in opposition to outsiders.\" [NORTON\n1983: 191]. It is further described as \"an ongoing process, a reaction to\ncategorical ascription by others as well as a reaction to the creation and\nincorporation of symbols into the collective identity.\" [STAIANO1980:\n29]. It also involves \"the search for identity, the formulation of some\nsymbolic description of self.\" [STAiANo 1980: 30]. This means in the\nfirst place that an analysis of Sri Lankan Malay ethnicity must concern\nitself with how the group perceives and defines itself. This in fact is a better\nstarting point to understand the question of ethnicity of the present\nday Malay community.
