Based on its appearance the deposit\nwas first reported as containing barnyard millet (Echinochloa sp.) .\nSasaki (first author) received a sample from Yunnan Museum for closer\nexamination, using scanning electron microscopy. Matsutani identified\nthe cereal as foxtail millet (Setaria italica) . Here, Li discusses the\nsignificance of foxtail millet in Chinese archaeology. Sakamoto\ndiscusses the place of origin and possible dispersal routes of\ndomesticated Setaria italica.
