In this sense `spontaneous form'\noffers very interesting issues in terms of general linguistics.\nThe purpose of this paper is to classify the usages of the verb suffix\n- (r) asar-, which is said to denote 'spontaneity', into three, namely\nguuhatsukooi yoohoo (accidental action usage) , shizenhassei yoohoo\n(spontaneous occurrence usage) and kanoo yoohoo (potentiality\nusage) , and to describe the semantic and morphosyntactic characteristics\nof these usages.\nThe three usages show various semantic and morphosyntactic\ndifferences. For instance, the past form of kanoo yoohoo, which\ndenotes potentiality, does not always imply the occurrence of an event,\nbut that of the other usages always does; in kanoo yoohoo, subject\nnouns can be marked with -ni (so-called dative case particle) , but in the\nother usages they can never be so marked; when a transitive verb is used\nin shizenhassei yoohoo, which denotes spontaneous events, it can be\nconsidered to change to an intransitive verb taking its undergoer argument\nas its subject, but no such phenomenon is found in the other\nusages.\nWith such semantic and morphosyntactic differences, it is clear that\nthese usages cannot be treated uniformly.
