A most salient technological\nchange is the increased use of the Internet. In terms of the\ntopics discussed, globalization and gender are the two new areas to which\ndetailed attention is given. Postmodernism has influenced the new\nedition's overall orientation, especially in chapters on epistemology,\nethnographic writing, the culture concept, political power, and art. The\nold edition's evolutionary approach has been retained, however, and\ntheoretical inconsistency is observed in the juxtaposition of the traditional\n\"grand narratives\" and the postmodern critiques that refute them.\nAlso problematic is the virtual identification of American anthropology\nwith the diverse anthropologies in the rest of the world. Comparison\nwith other textbooks shows that they have the same problems and\ntendencies.
