The development of\na highly effective subsistence economy as well as a relatively high population\ndensity, large settlement size and substantial population in the\npre-contact and early contact periods make it reasonable to include the\nKamchatka inhabitants of the early 18th century in the category of\nranked societies. Some distinct features of those societies can help to\nexplain the ((bizarre)) customs of Kamchatka Itel'mens and other populations,\nwhich were a surprise for the explorers of the 18th century. A\nritual of establishment of partnership in relation to a system of exchange\nis analyzed as well as connections between hospitality, feasts and some\nbasic characteristics of subsistence economy and social organization.\nTraditional attitudes to the shaping of identity and its cultural basis are\nalso discussed.
