In late\nMahayana Buddhism an enormous amount of effort was made to depict\nBuddhas or deities on stone, metal, cloth and the like. Especially in\nTantric Buddhism, which may be considered part of Mahayana Buddhism,\nimages or icons of Buddhist deities played an essential part in\nrituals and meditations, with the result that iconographical systems\nconcerning images of Buddhist deities were established according to\nschools, ages, areas, and so forth. This paper is intended to furnish\nmaterials for iconographic studies of Bodhisattvas, especially the group\ncalled the Sixteen Bodhisattvas.\nA number of mandalas have been preserved in the Kathmandu\nValley. Among those mandalas seen in places such as the courtyards of\nBuddhist temples, the Dharmadhatuvagigvara Mandala (Dharmadhatu\nMandala) is the most popular. The Sixteen Bodhisattvas, who may be\nregarded as representatives of Bodhisattvas, are included in the deities of\nthe Dharmadhatu Mandala.\nThe symbols held in the hands of each of the Sixteen Bodhisattvas\nhave been iconographically determined. Although there are a number\nof Dharmadhatu Mandalas depicted on stone, metal, and paper in the\nKathmandu Valley, it is rather rare to find a Dharmadhatu Mandala in\nwhich each of the Sixteen Bodhisattvas is clearly illustrated.
