The theory put forward in this article and evolved in several\npapers, monographs and symposia through the years implies Umesao's conviction\nthat Japanese civilization as a concrete existing system of people and\ninstitutions (and as such different from the intellectual abstract of this system,\ni. e. culture) resembles in many aspects that of Western Europe while\nat the same time is entirely different from the systems underlying East Asiatic\ncultures similar to Japan. Umesao's scientific work brought about a deep\nand ongoing change of paradigm in Japanese ethnology, dominated since the\ntimes of Henry von Siebold and Edward S. Morse by questions of Japanese\nethnogenesis, prehistory and the foundation of the early Japanese state, as can\nbe seen for instance in the studies of scholars like Oka Masao, Egami Namio\nor Yanagita Kunio.
