In addition to these ethnic\ngroups, various ethnic minority peoples live in the Malay Peninsula. One\nof them is the Orang Ash. Many anthropologists have conducted research on\nthe Orang Ash so far. They described the \"traditional\" life world of the Orang\nAsh in their ethnographies. However, the Orang Ash have experienced a drastic\nchange in recent years because of the intervention from the outer world: that\nis, development and Islamization. It is said that the traditional life world of the\nOrang Ash has rapidly disappeared in the process of \"de-culturalization.\"\nThe purpose of this article is to elucidate the life world of the Orang\nAsh in the present situation, using the ethnographical data from my fieldwork\n(1996-1998). The data in this article were obtained mainly by household survey.\nThe data concerning household income are supplemented by the data concerning\nearnings from rubber tapping and durian harvest.\nIn the first half part of this article, I will sketch the village history of\nDurian Tawar to explicate the process of social stratification among villagers: a\ndifferentiation between \"upper people\" and \"lower people.\" I will demonstrate\nincome disparities between them, using data from household survey and data\nconcerning earnings from rubber tapping and durian harvest.\nThe second half in this article presents detailed information on each household\nin numerical order as \"Household Memorandum.\" Having a difficulty in\nconducting a complete analysis of \"Household Memorandum,\" I shall explain\na discovery process of research topics. By drawing up \"Household Memorandum,\"\nI discovered various research topics; for example, differentiation of\noccupation, logic of development, complicated kinship relationship, hybridity\nand so on. Thus, it can be said that \"Household Memorandum\" shows the present\nlife world of the Orang
