I criticize\nprevious studies on Indian Muslims, in which the inter-relations between\ncastes have been mainly studied rather than the intra-relations of castes.\nThe Khatri were recognized as dyers among local people, and they produced\ndyed fabrics both for local demand and for regional merchants outside\nKutch in such places as Bombay.\nAlthough the Khatri had a well-established jamaat (caste-like Muslim\ncommunity in Gujarat) organization, this did not actually function as a trade\nassociation.
