These projects often adversely affect the lives and cultures of the peoples\ncaught up in the process. However, indigenous peoples and their organizations\nhave maintained that their rights to the land and natural resources\nshould be recognized and respected by the State concerned as well as by the\ninternational community as a whole. In particular, they demand that their\nrights should be safeguarded in cases where the negative effect of the development\nproject is so grave that their distinct culture and identity or physical\nsurvival is at risk. In such cases, respect for, and realization of, their free,\nprior and informed consent towards the development is the most fundamental\nprinciple.
