This\npaper explores how the masculinity of religion may be confronted in order to\nreduce friction between feminism and religious studies from the perspective\nof women, who practice Theravāda Buddhism, in a village in Upper Burma\n(Myanmar).\nDespite remarkable male chauvinism in the Buddhist rituals, such as\nthe frequency of bows called gádaw, this study reveals that some women\nthink themselves superior to men in terms of merit making, as women take\non important religious roles at both the village and household levels. Other\nwomen regard the frequency of bows not as demonstrating the religious inferiority\nof females but as a merit-making act and evidence of their devoutness.\nAlthough a subtle case, such interpretations that women make about\ngádaw indicate the possibility of change from within the male-oriented nature\nof Buddhism.
