With no record or testimony that would allow us to trace his upbringing\nor intellectual background, Gastón Agüero has remained an obscure\nthinker or, to use Masao Yamaguchi’s phrase, a “haisha (loser)” both in Cuba\nand the rest of the world. As if to justify his obscurity, his argument demonstrating\nthe compatibility between the “scientific materialism” of Engels and\nLenin, and the “fetishism” of Santería appears preposterous to many of us\nwho embrace the “normal sciences.” However I argue that the very eccentricity\nof his thought makes it all the more important because it enables us to defamiliarize\nthe “modernization” project pursued both before and after the triumph\nof the Revolution (1959) and to speculate on how the project has been\nfashioning itself by actively excluding alternative possibilities. To make this\npoint clearer I turn to Bruno Latour’s views on “modernity,” which find at its\ncore the purification activities that continuously divide our world into Nature\nand Society.
