The cultural\nanthropology of whaling, including both basic and applied research, provides\na forum in which a researcher can express how he/she relates to the contemporary\nworld. Also, he/she can explore and understand several aspects of the\nglobalizing world system through the study of contemporary whaling. In this\npaper, the author discusses major cultural anthropological studies of whaling\nand associated research trends, characteristics and problems. Regarding\nresearch characteristics and trends, it is suggested that very little research into\nwhaling has been done recently in the field of cultural anthropology, with the\nexception of studies of indigenous and local whaling. Also, it is suggested that\nwhile several Japanese cultural anthropologists tend to carry out basic ethnographic\nresearch on indigenous and local whaling, Euro-American cultural\nanthropologists have a tendency to engage in practice oriented (‘action-anthropology’)\nresearch on indigenous whaling.
