Both are social devices relating to the culturally\nincluding an efficient distribution device to the whole community, a contribution\nto community welfare, and a leveling mechanism for the consumption of\nwhale products at the individual or household level, in addition to reproduction\nfunctions of the Inupiat worldview, identities at several levels, and social\nrelationships. Also, through these two kinds of sharing practice, whaling captains\nand their crews attain social prestige and political influence.
