Despite its social and cultural importance,\nthe Tolai people cannot produce this shell money for themselves. The\nraw shell, nassarius camelus cannot be collected near Rabaul. Before European\ncontact at the end of the 19th century, a trade network had been established\nbetween Rabaul and the Nakanai area on the north coast of West New\nBritain. The source of tabu shells has changed in each era. Since the 1960s,\nthe western province of the Solomon Islands has become the main source of\nthe shells.\nThere are no public transportation facilities between the western province\nof the Solomon Islands and Rabaul. Traders must cross the border and\ntravel 800km in their own dinghies with outboard motors. Despite these\nsevere conditions, some traders have engaged in this business.\nTo make the process clear, I conducted fieldwork in three locations, the\nwestern province of the Solomon Islands, Rabaul, and the intermediary point:\nBougainville Island. During this fieldwork, I found one influential channel in\nthis trade network.
