How they dealt with this contradictory\nsituation and what the personal, social and economic costs were the research\nquestions that guide the studies outlined in this paper. By the 2000s in Osaka,\nthirty-three Korean clubs operated in the district called Minami, where, typically,\nSouth Korean-born women served Japanese-born men. I conducted\nparticipant observation as a paid hostess at one of them between 2000 and\n2001, discussing the questions above with one entertainer, two hostesses and\none associate mama (senior-status hostess with management responsibilities)\nas main informants.
