This paper looks at this process through the ethnographic analysis of\nthe micro-politics of identity among Japanese Filipino Children (JFC), and\nits articulation in the broader context of Japanese society, where the negative\nstereotyping of Filipinos has prevailed. JFC seem to have learnt by experience\nthe need to develop specific mechanisms for addressing the Japanese\nethnic majority’s prejudices, and imagine and create a different and favorable\nimpression by using their multiple inherited cultural backgrounds. With\nthis aim, JFC proudly exhibit the European origin of their family names and\ntheir command of English—deriving from the Spanish and American colonial\nrule of the Philippines, respectively. In configuring the JFC identity,\nthese vindicated colonial vestiges are taken out of their historical context\nof domination and transnationally used to different ends in contemporary\nJapan.
