About 15 years later, we suffered the Great East Japan Earthquake.\nIn the Great East Japan Earthquake, rescue operations for tangible\ncultural properties damaged to an unimaginable degree were carried out for\nthe second time. Of course these operations, over two fiscal years 2011 to\n2013, could take advantage of the experiences of the Great Hanshin-Awaji\nEarthquake and later disasters. They have been considered a great success.\nHowever problems became apparent with the activities and methods used\nin the rescue operations, which must be addressed before the next disaster.\nIn this paper, I have explained the activities and the problems of the\nrescue operations in which I took part, and have pointed out other methods\nof rescue for damaged tangible cultural properties in order to prepare for the\nnext disaster.\nI have also made it clear that rescue operations for tangible cultural\nproperties cannot be considered complete with rescue, temporary storage,\nemergency treatment, but that those properties should be displayed in exhibitions,\nand must be connected to the reconstruction activities and regional\nrevitalization of the affected areas. In addition, I also point out the problems\nof carrying over to the next generation the conservation of the damaged\ntangible cultural properties.
