貝殻交易ネットワークの地域史 : ビスマルク諸島とソロモン諸島地域間におけるムシロガイ交易の歴史的変遷と現状 The Trade Network of Shell Money in Local History : The Historical Transitions and Present Situation of the Trade of Nassa Shells in the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands 深田, 淳太郎 フカダ, ジュンタロウ Fukada, Juntaro 長距離交易｜貝殻貨幣｜メラネシア現代史｜パプアニューギニア｜ソロモン諸島 long distance trade｜shell money｜modern Melanesian history｜Papua New Guinea｜Solomon Islands パプアニューギニア，ラバウルに住むトーライ人はタブと呼ばれる貝殻貨幣 を，婚資や賠償の支払い，儀礼での展示等のいわゆる慣習的な威信財としての みならず，商品売買や税金・授業料の支払いなどの交換媒体としてまで広い目 的で使用してきた。このタブの原料となるムシロガイの貝殻はラバウルの近辺 では採れず，遠方から輸入されてくるものである。その輸入元はヨーロッパ人 との接触があった19 世紀以降，何度かの変遷を経て，現在では隣国であるソ ロモン諸島の西部地域になっている。本稿ではまず，このラバウルへのムシロ ガイの輸入が現在までどのように行なわれ，またいかにそのかたちを変えてき たのかについての歴史的経緯を19 世紀末から1970 年代まで文献資料をもとに 整理する。その上で1980 年代からのソロモン諸島からの輸入がはじまった経 緯および，現在の輸入の具体的な状況について，2009–2011 年に実施した現地 調査で収集した資料をもとに明らかにする。 In the Tolai society of Papua New Guinea, a shell money called tabu is used for a wide variety of purposes. Despite its social and cultural importance, the Tolai people cannot produce this shell money for themselves. The raw shell, nassarius camelus cannot be collected near Rabaul. Before European contact at the end of the 19th century, a trade network had been established between Rabaul and the Nakanai area on the north coast of West New Britain. The source of tabu shells has changed in each era. Since the 1960s, the western province of the Solomon Islands has become the main source of the shells. There are no public transportation facilities between the western province of the Solomon Islands and Rabaul. Traders must cross the border and travel 800km in their own dinghies with outboard motors. Despite these severe conditions, some traders have engaged in this business. To make the process clear, I conducted fieldwork in three locations, the western province of the Solomon Islands, Rabaul, and the intermediary point: Bougainville Island. During this fieldwork, I found one influential channel in this trade network.
