| 内容記述 | 小稿は，神智協会の創設者にして，のちの隠秘主義（オカルティズム）や西 欧世界における仏教なかんずくチベット仏教の受容，普及に決定的な役割を果 たしたマダム・ブラヴァツキーが，具体的にどのようにチベット（仏教）に関 わり，どのような成果を収め，さらにその結果後世にどのような影響を及ぼし たのかについて，とくに南アジア・ナショナリズムとの関連に議論を収斂させ ながら，神話論的，系譜学的な観点から人類学的に考察しようとするものであ る。ここでは，マダム・ブラヴァツキー自身のアストラハン地方における幼児 体験をもとに，当時未踏の地，不可視の秘境などととらえられていたオリエン タリスト的チベット表象を触媒にして，チベット・イデオロギーへと転換して いったのかが跡づけられる。その際，マダム・ブラヴァツキーのみならず，隠 秘主義そのものが，概念の境界を明確化する西欧近代主義イデオロギーを無効 化するとともに，むしろそれを逆手にとった植民地主義批判であったことの意 義を明らかにする。 |

| 内容記述 | Although she died more than 120 years ago, Madame Blavatsky, the “Godmother of New Age,” and cofounder of the Theosophical Society, is surely one of the most controversial figures even now in the 21st century. Blavatsky lived for a year in Astrakhan, Caucasus, where Kalmyk Tibetan Buddhists lived, together with her mother and grandparents when she was little. That was her first contact with Tibetan Buddhism, or even Buddhism itself. Besides, Tibet has captured the popular imagination, from the exotic Shangri-La image promoting immortality, to backward Lamaist traditions. This is a genealogical, anthropological study attempting to explore the process of the changes from her childhood experiences and the Orientalist portrayals of Tibet, mingled together to mold the Tibet ideology of Madame Blavatsky and the Theosophical Society, and their aesthetic, intellectual, and political influences in the 19th and 20th centuries. |
